viu.start(); names the opening concert of the fifth edition of the /*viu*/
live coding festival. On this occasion, featuring a wild range of live coding possibilities reflected on musical practices as contrasting as the technical tools creating them. Ranging from electrical noise to algorithmic pattern melodies this concert will take us to that space when patch programming and high-level abstractions are used for real-time human-machine interaction using code for music making.

QBRNTHSS
(pronounced “quebrantahuesos”, meaning “bearded vulture” in Spanish) is the alias that Ramon Casamajó, musician and educator, uses for his solo works focused on electronics and live coding. He presents “The Magic Words Are Squeamish Ossifrage” (Interworld Media, 2023), his first full-length album as QBRNTHSS, the result of more than a year of live performances and rehearsals using Tidal Cycles and Supercollider as main instruments. Aesthetically it’s a mixture of synthetic textures, noisy ambients and broken rhythms. For this permormance he will add acoustic sound sources to his setup.
Messica Arson is a Brooklyn-based artist who creates unique and electrifying computational noise music. Using live coding and live sampling, she incorporates sampled screams into her beats to add a raw and powerful element to her sound. Described by The Financial Times as "gnarly cut-up sounds," her music is not afraid to push the boundaries of traditional music.

Livecodera is the name of the community of people who identify as women and propose live coding as a tool to open questions around situated practice and create networks of collective thought. "I care about eating, making art, having sex, sleeping and coding." (https://livecodera.glitch.me/)
The session will be held as a conversation and open discussion in a hybrid online/offline format at Hangar and via live video streaming.

The from scratch technique consists of playing live for 9 minutes starting from an empty screen. In this way, it allows to visualize the high or low level of the languages (try to play from scratch using, for example, Tidal, SuperCollider or Csound), making transparent the tools (classes, functions, data structures, etc.) that allow the live coder to carry out the different musical tasks within the performance. These sessions seek to take advantage of the empty screen restriction and the 9 minutes to explore new possibilities.
Friday, April 28
Location: Hangar, C/ Emilia Coranty 16, Sala Ricson
19:30h

Multichannel expansion is a SuperCollider function that allows any sound signal to be distributed to multiple channels at once. Allholy, Iván Paz, Maia Francisco, Alicia Champlin & Niklas Reppel, Pondskater and Noi$ will be presenting their audio-spatialization experimental sets in an 8-channel sound system.
Saturday April 29
Canodrom, Carrer de Concepció Arenal, 165
11-14h
Animatron is an experimental environment that allows creating visual poetry with real-time animation collages through live coding, or with any application or device via the OSC or MIDI protocol. Visuals can be created both collaboratively and individually.
During the workshop, participants will learn to:
No prior experience or special software is required.

Algoraves are concerts where music generated by algorithms is performed live and danced, together with visuals also generated on the spot, making the code visible. Algorave is not "the future of electronic music", we are just part of a much longer story.
